Every skip bin has two limits: volume and weight. Most people focus on whether their waste will physically fit in the bin and forget about the weight. Exceed the weight allowance and you will pay an excess fee on top of the hire cost. Here is how weight limits work in Brisbane and how to stay within them.
How Weight Limits Work
Each skip bin size comes with a weight allowance that depends on the waste type. General household waste in a 4m3 bin might have a weight limit of 500kg to 800kg. Green waste bins have similar limits because wet garden clippings are heavier than people expect. Construction and heavy waste bins have higher weight allowances, but they also cost more per tonne if you exceed them. When the truck picks up your bin, it weighs it. If the load exceeds the allowance, the excess is charged at a per tonne rate.
Which Materials Are Heaviest?
Concrete, bricks, and tiles are the heaviest common materials. A few square metres of old concrete pavers can weigh several hundred kilograms. Soil and sand are also heavy, especially when wet. Timber is moderate depending on the type and condition. General household items like furniture, clothing, and packaging are relatively light compared to their volume. Green waste sits somewhere in the middle but gets much heavier after rain.
How to Estimate Your Waste Weight
For general household waste, you are unlikely to exceed the weight limit if the bin is not overfilled. For construction waste, roughly estimate the volume of heavy materials and assume concrete weighs about 2,400kg per cubic metre, bricks about 1,800kg per cubic metre, and soil about 1,500kg per cubic metre. Even a small volume of these materials adds up fast.
Avoiding Overweight Charges
Ask about the weight limit for your bin size and waste type when you book. Keep heavy materials like concrete and soil to a minimum in general waste bins. If you have a large volume of heavy waste, consider a dedicated heavy waste or concrete only bin where the pricing already accounts for the weight. Do not overfill the bin above the rim, as this adds both volume and weight. And if wet weather is expected, load the bin as close to collection day as possible to avoid green waste absorbing rain.
