Where to Place a Skip Bin: Driveways, Streets and Council Permits in Brisbane

The most common place for a skip bin is your driveway. But not every property has a driveway that works, and sometimes the bin needs to go on the street, a nature strip, or another area. Here are the rules for skip bin placement in Brisbane and when you need a council permit.

On Your Driveway

Your driveway is the simplest option. No permit needed, no council involvement. The bin sits on your private property and you can fill it whenever you like. Most driveways accommodate a 2m3 to 6m3 bin without blocking vehicle access. Larger bins may take up the full width of a single driveway.

On the Street or Nature Strip

If the bin needs to go on a public road, footpath, or nature strip, you will need a council permit. Brisbane City Council and other local councils in the region require a permit for any skip bin placed on council owned land. The permit process ensures the bin does not obstruct traffic, pedestrians, or emergency access. Permit costs vary by council area.

How to Get a Council Permit

We can help with the permit process. We have public liability insurance, which most councils require from the skip bin operator. You or we apply to the relevant council, pay the permit fee, and receive approval. The permit specifies where the bin can be placed and for how long. Turnaround is usually a few business days.

Placement Tips

Choose a flat, solid surface. Bins on soft ground can sink and become difficult to collect. Keep the bin accessible for the truck. The driver needs a clear path with enough height for the crane arm. Do not place the bin under power lines, low branches, or overhanging structures. Place the bin as close to the waste source as practical to minimise carrying distance.
