You have hired a skip bin and you want to throw everything in. Understandable. But some materials are banned from skip bins in Brisbane, and putting them in can result in contamination charges, load rejection at the tip, or in some cases, legal issues. Here is the full list of what cannot go in.
Asbestos
Asbestos containing materials are strictly prohibited in all skip bin types. This includes asbestos cement sheeting (fibro), insulation, roof tiles, and any material that contains asbestos fibres. Asbestos must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist and disposed of at a licensed facility. If you suspect materials in your renovation contain asbestos, stop work and get them tested before continuing. This is a legal requirement in Queensland, not just a skip bin rule.
Hazardous Chemicals and Liquids
Paint (liquid), solvents, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, motor oil, fuel, acids, and any other hazardous chemicals cannot go in a skip bin. These materials can contaminate other waste, damage the bin, and create safety risks during transport and at the disposal facility. Brisbane City Council and other local councils run periodic household chemical collection events, or you can drop hazardous waste at designated facilities.
Gas Bottles and Pressurised Containers
LPG bottles, fire extinguishers, aerosol cans (if not completely empty), and any pressurised containers are prohibited. They pose an explosion risk when crushed or compacted.
Batteries and Electrical Items with Hazardous Components
Car batteries, lithium batteries, and other battery types should not go in skip bins due to fire and contamination risk. Some electrical items containing refrigerants (fridges, air conditioners) are also restricted.
Tyres
Most skip bin operators do not accept tyres because they are difficult and expensive to process. Tyres need to go to a tyre recycler or designated collection point.
Medical and Biological Waste
Needles, syringes, clinical waste, and biological materials must be disposed of through appropriate medical waste services.
What Happens if Prohibited Items Are Found
If the disposal facility finds prohibited items in your skip bin load, the entire load may be rejected or reclassified to a more expensive waste category. The extra cost gets passed back to you. In the case of asbestos, there can be significant fines under Queensland environmental legislation.
