When you are doing a renovation or big cleanout, you end up with different types of waste. Garden clippings from the yard work. Timber, plasterboard, and tiles from the renovation. Old furniture and household junk from the cleanout. The question is whether to throw everything in one mixed waste bin or separate it into different bins by type.
The Case for One Mixed Bin
It is simpler. You hire one bin, throw everything in, and you are done. No sorting, no thinking about which item goes where. For small to medium jobs where the total volume is under 4m3 and the waste is mostly general household stuff with a bit of everything mixed in, one general waste bin is usually the most practical and cost effective option.
The Case for Separating Waste
Once the volume gets larger, separation starts saving money. Green waste bins are cheaper than general waste bins because the tipping fees are lower. Concrete only bins can also be cheaper per tonne than mixed heavy waste. If you have a large landscaping job plus a house cleanout, hiring a 4m3 green waste bin for the garden and a 3m3 general waste bin for the house might cost less total than a single 8m3 mixed waste bin, even though you are hiring two bins. The maths depends on the volumes and waste types involved.
When Separation Is Not Worth It
For small jobs under 4m3 of total waste, the logistics of managing two bins, two deliveries, and two collections usually outweigh any savings on tipping fees. If you are doing a quick weekend cleanout, one bin keeps things simple.
When Separation Pays Off
Large renovation projects where you have distinct piles of green waste, construction materials, and general household waste. Deceased estate cleanouts where garden maintenance has been neglected and there is a large volume of green waste alongside household items. Commercial projects where waste streams are distinct and volumes are high.
