The single most common question we get is which size bin do I need? Get it wrong and you either waste money on unused space or end up needing a second bin, which is even more expensive. Here is a straightforward way to figure out the right size for your job.
The Wheelie Bin Method
The easiest way to estimate is to think in wheelie bins. A standard kerbside wheelie bin holds 240 litres. Count how many wheelie bin loads you think your waste would fill, then match it to a skip bin size. A 2m3 bin holds about 8 to 10 wheelie bins. A 3m3 holds 12 to 14. A 4m3 holds 16 to 20. A 6m3 holds 24 to 30. An 8m3 holds 32 to 40. And a 10m3 holds 40 to 50.
By Project Type
Single room cleanout or small garden tidy: 2m3. Garage or shed cleanout: 3m3 to 4m3. Bathroom renovation: 4m3. Kitchen renovation: 6m3. Full home renovation across multiple rooms: 8m3. House demolition or major construction: 10m3 to 12m3. Deceased estate cleanout: 6m3 to 8m3 depending on how much there is. Office or commercial fit out: 6m3 to 10m3 depending on size.
The Golden Rule
If you are between two sizes, go up. The price difference between a 3m and a 4m bin is usually $50 to $70. The cost of hiring a second 3m bin because the first one was not big enough is $300 plus. It is always cheaper to go one size up than to order twice.
Weight vs Volume
Volume is only half the equation. Heavy materials like concrete, bricks, soil, and tiles fill the weight allowance long before they fill the volume. A 4m3 bin filled with concrete will be far over the weight limit even though the bin is not full to the brim. If you are disposing of heavy materials, ask about weight limits when you book.
